Our Style Is So Different

Writing is Unique

This week, I’ve come to realize just how different our writing styles can be. I always knew we each have our own way of saying things, but even the way we structure and frame our words is uniquely our own. Looking beyond how we say things, we can use tone, punctuation, and even paragraphs to help us better are point across.

This became clear to me after working on the assignments due for class this week. The first assignment required me to write a brief self-introduction blog for my classmates, providing a recap of who I am. The only catch was that I wasn’t allowed to write about myself in the first person. Instead of saying ‘I’ and ‘my,’ I had to refer to myself in the third person. To say it felt weird would be an understatement.

What I found most fascinating about that assignment was that, even in the third person, my writing style was still clearly evident in the introduction. While I think this might simply be because I am so used to my own writing style, when I worked on other assignments where I was reading and revising other people’s work, I began to notice how different their writing styles were from my own. In fact, I felt like a lot my revisions to their work was me trying to shift their style into one that was more like mine.

Comparing Articles

Recognizing differences in writing styles wasn’t just something I noticed in comparison to my own writing; it was also noticeable in other writings I found online. For another class assignment this week, I was tasked with finding two articles on the same topic but written in different styles. I chose to compare two articles about marketing tactics on TikTok. After analyzing both, I found that Neil Patel’s article, TikTok SEO: Expand Your Brand’s Reach on TikTok, was the stronger piece compared to some of the other articles I reviewed for the assignment. There is something to say for having cohesive brand coloring and font and text that aligns well. Truthfully, it can make or break how well a writing piece actually is.
