Why Social Media Still Has the Power to Do Good

It’s Easy to Be Skeptical

Be honest, how many times have you liked a post about an important issue and then kept scrolling?

Social media does not always feel like a place where real change happens. It can feel repetitive, dramatic, and sometimes even overwhelming. People are constantly reposting things, sharing opinions, and then moving on. Because of this, it is easy to assume that social media is more about appearances than actual impact.

But I don’t think this tells the full story…

Awareness Still Matters

One thing social media does really well is spread information quickly. Topics that may once have gone unnoticed can now reach thousands, or even millions, of people in seconds. That kind of visibility is powerful. It introduces people to issues they may not have been aware of and encourages conversations that might not have happened otherwise.

Research from the Pew Research Center shows that a majority of adults use social media, making it one of the most effective ways to reach large audiences quickly. Because of that, these platforms have become a major space for learning about both social and political issues.

Even if awareness is just the first step, it is still important. After all, we can’t take action on something we don’t even know about.

Give Direction

I’ve actually noticed this in my own experience. There have been times where I’ve come across posts about certain causes or issues that I honestly would not have known about otherwise. At first, I would just read them, maybe like or repost, and keep scrolling. I was staying informed and sharing my thoughts with the people who follow me online, but not really doing much beyond that.

But, thinking more about these instances, there have also been moments where a post included a direct link, a clear next step, or even just a simple explanation of how to help. In those cases, I was actually way more likely to do something, whether that was signing something, donating, or even just taking the time to learn more beyond the post itself. That difference made me realize that social media really can lead to real action; it just depends on how it is used.

Where I See Real Potential

This is why I believe the biggest opportunity lies in how content is presented. When posts include clear, direct ways to get involved, people are more likely to follow through. Without that direction, it is easy for people to scroll past and feel like they have already “done enough” just by engaging with the post.

So ask yourself, when was the last time you actually did something after seeing a post?

The Power of Connection

Another positive aspect of social media is the sense of community it creates. People can find others who share similar experiences, beliefs, or goals. That connection can make a huge difference. It can motivate people to stay engaged, speak up, and take action in ways they might not have on their own.

It also gives individuals a voice. People who may not have had a platform before can now share their perspectives and be heard.

Social media is just a tool. Its impact depends on how people choose to use it. There will always be moments where it feels surface-level, but that does not mean it cannot be meaningful.

The real question isn’t whether social media can create change; it is whether we are willing to go beyond the scroll and actually be part of it.
